Socrates' Utopia

Jennifer, I think your empathy for humanity is spot on. Plato is reasoning strictly from a philosophy similar to math. It's very structured and well-baked...even though information technology'southward not. The thought of a gild actually trying to structure itself in this way is interesting to think well-nigh. I e'er just took it as a thought experiment and never really a proposal for reality. I wonder if it would exist successful? I'm sure Plato was style more intelligent that us, or perchance not?

Considering how famous and influential The Commonwealth has been, I was appalled when I actually read it. Plato's utopia is strictly controlled, correct downwards the fact that the guardians are not raised in families simply in a communal situation (basically an orphanage). People are allowed only the minimum of private property, no choice (as you say) in vocation, merely very restricted music, and basically no faith (lies about the gods), or fine art. In brusk, Plato thinks he tin create a perfect society by stripping away everything that makes people human and that makes human life worth living.

I tin forgive Plato for his - what I tin but call - appalling ignorance of human being nature because he lived in a very aristocratic, pagan society. He had never been exposed to the Hebrew Bible or to Christian teachings, which so humanized the world. He also, thankfully, never lived to meet his vision actually tried in places like Stalinist Russian federation and Maoist Prc.

His reasoning seems to brand and so much sense if yous assume that people are pure logic machines who only need to exist purged of messy things like emotion and love for their families, their property, beauty, humour, and the spiritual. Just as information technology turns out, we aren't.

Jay C, I completely concur that many of Plato's theories of a perfect society autumn short to my line of thinking also. I think his thought was that since the highest class would exist the greatest philosophers (forth with having experience in war), they would know the repercussions of war, would be able to philosophize whether war was a necessity, and then would brand highly educated choices for the proficient of the community (as they volition ever put the customs before themselves).
